Personal counselling

Why make an appointment to see a counsellor?

Personal counselling is a process of talking and listening to help creatively resolve problems. This is usually done on a one to one basis.

Common issues discussed

  • feelings of anxiety, depression
  • concerns about university work
  • relationship difficulties (family, partners, friends, house-mates)
  • stress at home, work or university
  • managing life with disabilities or health issues
  • loss or trauma
  • worries about lack of confidence, body image, self-esteem

What to expect

Counselling sessions are generally 50 minutes in duration.
A typical session might:

  • help identify issues, explain and clarify your feelings
  • assist you to resolve your problem
  • provide you with information about University systems and procedures
  • refer you to other helpful resources on campus
  • offer you further counselling or refer you to a more appropriate agency in the wider community
